Keep Taking the Pills

Stress at work seems to be a fact of business life – so the answer is to take some corporate stress pills!

I have seen all sorts of solutions from lunch time massages to full blown "stress management" courses which in themselves seem to add to the stress due to time away from work.

Why are all the cures centred on the employee and none on the business? – I suppose it always seems easier to treat the symptoms rather than the cause.

Employees do not create the Stress!

– at least not for themselves!

What is the cause of stress in the workplace? My take on that based on personal experience of having had it and having cured it is:

Unsupportive business culture
Poor and inefficient business processes
Firefighting management
Employees working against each other rather than with each other
No ownership by employees or empowerment of employees
Employees feel they have no influence or control over their work

The net result is a de-motivated workforce and stressed and over worked managers!

Biggest Impact is on Profit!

The biggest impact however is on PROFIT! – you are not capitalising on opportunities and your costs are almost certainly higher than they should be!

Curing this problem our way may not be as quick and easy as sending a few managers on stress management courses but our way works! – for the business, its managers and its employees.
